Sounds of the Shasta Route

When the California State Railroad Museum opened in 1981, there was a collection of steam engines from around the country that attended. One of those engines was the former Southern Pacific GS-4 4-8-4 4449, on her first trip in Daylight colors since the days of the Coast Daylight. On April 25th, 1981, 4449 left Portland Union Station for a journey down the Shasta Route to Sacramento. The recording was originally made on Super8 sound movie film, subsequently transferred to 8mm video, and the converted to .mp3 format.

On April 2nd, 1994, we made one of several day trips to Willamette Pass. Instead of a 35mm camera, the camcorder made this trip with us. The camcorder has stereo sound capability, and listed below are audio souvenirs in .mp3 format of a day spent at Heather, Oregon. This is the third siding above Oakridge on the Cascade Line (Natron Cutoff). There is an unprotected grade crossing between switches, and this provides a good location for recording. (Note: Westbound trains are traveling upgrade, and some road numbers were unreadable having been covered in "tunnel grime")

	Eastbound light helpers 2 3-unit helper sets were coupled together for the run down the "Hill," and stopped at the grade crossing to change crews. After exchanging pleasantries, the new crew continued the trip to Eugene Yard.
